Fishing in San Diego Bay has been good, with Spotties (Spotted Sand Bass), Sandies
(Barred Sand Bass), Bonito and Barracuda all hitting the fly. Some
bonefish were also caught this week.

Offshore, makos are still around (4 caught last week), but the
real ticket are the blue sharks, which have appeared in good numbers
(this is the season for the big blues!) While they don't jump like makos, they fight
very hard and are great fun on the fly!

Beach fishing has been OK, but winding down a bit. We're still seeing some corbina

The bonito bite off la Jolla has taken off, with lots of 3 to 8
lb fish on the fly. The occasional yellowtail also shows up, got a nice 12 lber
as well. Lots of fish at the Coronado Islands, I think the fall migration
will be really good.

Fishing in Mission and San Diego Bay has been strong on the right tides,
with lot's of spotted bay bass and some bonito being caught.

Shark fishing has slowed somewhat..... there are a few around,
but you have to hunt for them. Once found it's good action on both blues and makos!

Courtesy River & Reef

Courtesy River & ReefUnbelievable!! Angler Brendan Mason, fishing with
Capt. Dave caught and
RELEASED a mako estimated at 11' and roughly 600 lbs.
This could be one of the largest, if not THE largest fish ever caught on
a fly! Randall Bryett captured the event on film, and you can see
the photo sequence and read the whole story at the River and Reef website.

Brendan was using a 30lb tippet, so the fish would not have qualified for an IGFA
record, but they would have released the fish anyway. Congratulations to Brendan
and Capt. Dave. Now that's "life on the
ragged edge!"

to long-line release a huge mako (estimated 9' in length, 250 lbs), and picked up
a yellowtail sight-casting to a paddie off La Jolla Canyon. There are still a lot
of fish in the area, and we expect the fishing to pick up as we move towards the

We've had 3 boats working this week, with Captain Jeff Stock helping out in his
20' Sea Fox. Mako fishing continues to excel, with 8 fish ranging
from 100 - 150lbs yesterday on the Upper 9 Mile Bank. Water conditions
offshore are great - clean, blue water, 80 degrees.

Closer to shore, we've been landing bonito up to 12 lbs in the
La Jolla Canyon, and spotted a huge thresher in the same area.

Fishing should continue like this through September and into October...but book
a trip soon, we're filling up!

cooler weather, windy conditions, and rock-and-roll swell. The fish scattered,

down, and almost no wind, but the fish were still MIA.

Not to worry, though. The fish will re-appear once the weather stabilizes and warms
